According to a recent TRN article, a joint research effort by Microsoft Research Asia and the University of Chicago has produced a system for block level web page analysis (which analyzes and indexes web pages according to spatial blocks and is supposed to be a very accurate method of determining the specific themes or subjects within a web page. Block level analysis can also be programmed to mimic the way people actually view a web page’s content). The article also discusses a link-based ranking system (also block-based) which could be PageRank’s technological superior. Apparently working algorithms have already been created for the block-level analysis system and the initial research data looks promising.
